The epidermis is comprised of four layers of keratin-producing
cells (keratinocytes). It also contains melanocytes, Langerhans
cells and Merkel cells. The layers of the epidermis around the eye
are described below; cells migrate superficially, undergoing maturation
and
differentiation
through
successive
layers.
